Hi,

I just derig my mast for checking and put it back. Can anyone tell me how much tension I need to put on each shroud ( upper, mid & lower) if I check them with rod tension gauge. The tunning guides just spell out the nos. of turns past hand-tight for Cap, D1 and D2 but such "hand-tight" feeling varies with different persons. Someone in the discussion forum said that it should be around 15% of rod tension's limit but what is the actual figure? Thank for your advice in advance!

Hi Emily,

I've noticed very different rig tension between boats with different brands of sails. We use Quantum and UK, and the sailmakers recommendation is 2400lbs on the uppers, 950lbs on the intermediates and 1700lbs on the lowers. The only adjustment we make for different wind conditions is the forestay length - class legal max length for 0-6kts, 1" shorter for 6-12kts, another 1" shorter for 12-18, and over 20 another half inch.

However, like I said other sailmakers design their sails for different rig tensions. North especially seems to be different.
