Subject: 2nd Manual Bilge Pump Down Below

The ISAF offshore regulations for all but category 3 and 4 races seem to require two manual bilge pumps, one of which has to be installed below decks. Has anyone out there installed a second pump down below, and if so where, how and what kind! Thanks.

Richard,

Since there was not room in front of the engine to turn the hand-crank anyway, I installed mine on the bulkhead that forms the forward side of the engine compartment, in front of the engine. There was plenty of clearance for a 'Gusher' type pump. I can sit on the edge of the quarterberth and get a good angle on the handle. We actually use this pump more than the cockpit mounted one.

Afterall, we are a sailboat, so if the engine really fails, just sail to the dock!

I mounted  a Whale Gusher on a piece of marine plywood, put 4' of hose on the intake and 15-20' on the outlet. This meets the requirements, but is portable (and advantage, actually, if you are holed forward) and can be removed from the boat easily for boy racing or cruising.
