Has anyone here installed an under deck autopilot drive on a standard tiller model J35?

Dan,  I have installed the Raytheon 6000 autopilot on my J-35.  I used the Edsion J-boat rudder shaft mount. I did have to modify it some to get the right fit. The autopilot hase worked great for the last 5 years, well worth the cost.

Then I guess you cut the tube that houses the rudder stock? And how did you seal it? I was considering a "gaiter" of wet suit material.

Edson wants to install the tiller arm. I have not talked to them directly. I went thru a retailer and they talked to Edson. When I finally sent them a drawing of the stock, they would not sell thru the retailer and wanted to have one of their reps install the arm. My drawing differed from the drawing they sent me. I suspect the portion of the drawing showed the bore of a quadrant for a wheel model.

I bought a Raymarine linear drive unit. It is the smallest one, but is rated for a 22000 lb boat. It has clutches to disengage while in standby.

Dan,

Yes I cut about 8" off the top. I have not worried about a seal because the top is still about 14" above the waterline. I did have to modify the Edson tiller arm (cutting / welding) to make it work. I did install the tiller arm facing backwards on the rudder post so that I could leave most of the tube. I have the same Raymarine linear drive unit with clutch, works great.  My day  time (EST) phone is 989-798-7952 if you want more information.
