Howdy All-

I'm trying to get my baby girl ready for an offshore race and was wondering what people have done to satisfy the Cat 2 requirement for an "alternative method for steering the yacht...in the event of rudder loss." (OSR Cat 2, Secition 4.15.1.b)  I'm not in the mood to install some Monitor windvane apparatus for the unlikely event of a rudder loss.  We have contemplated the traditional spin pole jury rig, but I'm not sure how much force we are talking about or if that ever really works. Does anyone have first-hand knowledge of a workable jury rig to steer a J/35 if the ruder fails?

One method is to tow a drogue with two warps used like a bridle. Each one can be adjusted by the primary winches. Tighten the port one to turn to the port, etc. I have satisfied the race requirements using this method. Mark
