Hi all, the cover is now coming off the J-35 I just purchased, and I am trying to figure out the deck hardware.  The boat has been used predominantly for cruising, and I don't think the past owner flew the spinnaker, at least in a while.  I am trying to figure out the rail blocks.  There are 4 Schaefer half-moons - from what I can tell from the deck plan, they are used to bring the running backs forward to the cabin top winches.  There are no spinnaker sheet leads.  I want to use both afterguys and sheets.  Where/how do you run the spin sheets and guys.  The deck diagram shows standup blocks midship that aren't on my boat.  Are these typically used for the afterguys? I would imagine that there should be some type of rail mounted lead block for the spin sheets??? Any thoughts or suggestions?  By the way, she is hull number 260, formerly "North Station" now "Surprise." Thanks.  Mark

Hi Mark. We run guys (one on each side) through the standups mounted mid ship just aft of the shrouds back to the primary winches. Spin gear is all run off bungie blocks (57mm hi load or 75mm low load Harken or similar ratchet blocks attached to the rail one one end and bungied to a lifeline on the other end to keep the block upright) attached to the outer rail as far back in the cockpit as you can get. Some boats (including both 35s that I sail on) rig turning blocks on the rail 12 inches aft of the doghouse to improve trimming angles (without these, the spin sheets would be trimmed right through the middle of the cockpit--trimmers usually don't care, but driver whines alot). The sheets are then run from the spin outside lifelines aft to the ratchets, then outside lifelines to rail-mounted turning blocks and then thru the lifeline and across the companionway to the secondary cans on the doghouse on the opposite side. Its sounds more complicated than it really is. I'd be happy to email you a rough diagram--I can't seem to attach one here, but it is fairly simple. Tony

Tony, Thanks a lot.  For some reason, my boat didn't have the standup blocks.  This really helps.  What kind/size standups do you have?  I would imagine you would need something in the 2500+ SWL range??  Mark
